100 faces challenge

Recently I decided to try and draw 100 faces within a week. I got the idea from watching videos by artist Nadia Enis, she suggested doing this challenge and other similar ones in order to get motivated, enjoy and experiment with art. I really recommend checking her work and her video series out!

I managed to do all 100 faces, and I’m looking forward to taking on another art challenge soon – perhaps 14 different animals in 14 days (studying 1 animal, multiple sketches, per day) or 50 poses in x amount of time, 1 environment drawing per day, x amount of compositional thumbnails per day, etc.

But first! I’ve decided that I am going to alternate between taking on challenges and working on portfolio projects. So – next up – I think I’m going to be doing some more character concept work. If you have been following my work, you may know that I have already been enjoying the world of character concepts and world building with my project Wander (a wizard dating simulator!), but for the next portfolio piece I think I’m going to create a standalone character. Wander has a particular visual style to it and it might be nice for me to explore other different ways of creation. It’s likely the concept will be of a similar vein, since it’s by me, but for this one I don’t want to put that limitation on it! I will keep you all updated, anyway.

For now, please enjoy these 100 faces.

post-Christmas

Hi everyone,

hope you all had a good Christmas. Hope everyone got to eat nice food and catch up with friends and relatives. On Christmas day we went to my aunt’s house for lunch and socialising, then on Boxing day my mum cooked a big feast of East Asian food for some family and her one of her friends too. Now I’m visiting J so I thought while it is quiet and there’s not much going on I could write a quick post just to say hi.

ink drawing

Today we are not sure what to do. J would like to relax for the day, I’m happy to do this but I think I need to give myself some tasks or things to do… I need to feel at least a bit productive, or I’ll feel restless. So that is why I decided to do a little blog update. It’s hard to think what to write or do really, I didn’t think to bring a proper sketchbook or my Japanese text book. I do however have several books to read and a mini sketchbook, so looks like my day might be spent trying to: study at least a tiny bit of Japanese, draw from reference perhaps, maybe finish the book I’m reading, etc.

As for my current art projects, I am still working on game design and also the collaborative book project I started with my friend. As I have had some deadlines for the game, I was a bit more lazy with the book project. Once I get back home on the 30th December, I hope to put a lot more effort into all my projects. I want to start again on the book project. What I am doing is illustrating, or rather, creating some art based on my friend’s poetry (although I’m not 100% certain what the response will result in). At first I was quite anxious on how to interpret them. But my friend has since written a little bit on the background of each poem, which I think will help me make something more relevant. I hope that she doesn’t mind that it has taken me a while to get going… and I hope that she will be happy with the resulting artwork.

With the game design group stuff, it’s progressing slowly but well, I will have a huge challenge creating the artwork as there’s so much to do and several new things to learn. We’ve decided to make a game for android devices, a pet game! I will give more information and pictures soon once I have actually made some more presentable art. I feel quite shy about the work that I’m producing for this game design thing, because I feel like the ideas that I am scribbling out at the moment are nowhere near the sophistication of actual game concept artists. Although I should be kinder to myself because I didn’t spend very long at all on the sketches and the main reason I created them was for the purpose of communicating my ideas quickly to my friends – they weren’t really made for an audience larger than maybe three people.

Oh well, that’s a quick update! I hope everyone is having a good holiday season… and hope all artistic, creative and other endeavours are going well. Thank you for reading!

November begins

commission

Dear all,

Yesterday I got back from a short stay in another town, and today I have been getting back into creating artwork… I haven’t drawn much as of late, but since returning and looking through tumblr, pinterest and various blogs, I remembered that oh yes, I want to be an artist…

So I thought I’d make a blog post today with a few images of what I have been working on. Above is the family portrait commission which I mentioned in my previous posts… I think I’ve almost finished it, I’m just waiting for the person to reply to my message and let me know whether they are happy with it.

comic

And here is  little comic book page that I started, it’s for the computer game that my friends and I made for the competition. We have agreed to work on completing the original game, and decided that it would be cool to have each diary page drawn out as a sort of comic. This is page one of the diary… there are perhaps about six or seven pages, so I’ll be working on those next. I think I’ll shade this picture a little bit more too, and then it’ll be coloured in photoshop.

It’s good to be back and actually working on active projects once again; also I’m glad to have the commission as I need to raise money for transport for the Leeds Thought Bubble convention on 23rd – 24th November (it’s on for longer but my friend and I are only doing two days). I’ll have to make some new work as well for the convention… time is running out and I’m scared that I’ll end up bringing our team down with sub par goods… thankfully from the previous exhibition I have some stickers and zines which would probably fit in at the con. Just need to get even more stuff done! Today I ordered some felt squares from etsy and some safety pins too, so that I can create some felt brooches.

While I’ve been working I have been watching a couple of different anime series, including K-On, which was recommended to me by a friend, and another new one called Kyoukai no Kanata. I also downloaded the first season of BBC’s Merlin – an extremely cheesy series about the wizard Merlin and his daily struggles in trying to keep Prince Arthur safe from harm – think bad jokes, funny CGI and so on.

I think that’s everything for this update. Tonight I’ll be shading the afore mentioned comic book page, fretting about the convention and whether my brooches will look awful or not, and watching more Merlin. I will finish up this blog post with an updated to do list; I hope you don’t mind.

Oh – also – I applied for a job as a graphic designer and unsurprisingly I did not get it. I think I would do okay although my portfolio is in dire need of a renovation and I need to learn more about Adobe Illustrator. It was kind of the guy to consider me though!

To Do List

  • Finish up family portrait commission
  • Comic strips for the game
  • Contact friend about poetry/art book collaboration
  • Illustration for friend’s tabletop RPG campaign
  • Thought Bubble convention preparation
  • Arrange driving lessons – or – study theory first

Anyway, thanks again for reading. Hope you are all doing well. Feel free to share your recent art or link to your blogs or whatever =)

t shirt design progress

Hi all,

this week I finished off a t shirt design commissioned by Cyclops Cameras, a project run by a local phd student. Here are a few images of the work in progress and the final design. He asked me to do a drawing in a similar style to one of my drawings in my recent exhibition. The designs have been put on t shirts which can be bought from Spreadshirt. I guess I’m pretty happy with the design although the first comment it received was “this design is too ‘babe*’ for me so I’ll wait for new ones” … Well, hopefully some other people will like it. I really hope so, not for the money, but because it would make me happy that people want to wear my work.

Elysia

*also, I really hope that most people do not interpret my artwork as ‘babe’, haha, although I can see why this particular design would be interpreted in that way.

portraits

Hi all again,

It’s been a while… recently I’ve been getting even more extra hours at the supermarket where I work, so I feel like I’m slowly getting behind in my work. I’m not working tomorrow however so I’m going to try and work really hard. Above are a few of the drawings I’ve been doing lately. It’s for part of my shop idea which I mentioned in an earlier post. I think I will screenprint some small portraits of public female figures and make them into collectible ACEO (small sized original art) to be collected.

My exhibition work has morphed again somewhat as I was originally planning to make a supermarket kind of environment. Now I’m just making my own shop environment, including things that I like, so this will involve a lot more of my own personality. Maybe I’ll post my mini write up on here as we have to make a 100 word description of the work for our exhibition catalogue.

As for life related things, apart from working at the supermarket, I’m not sure what else to say. I’m eating too many unhealthy things and I need to change that. I bought some donuts today at work but mainly for the purpose of going to my friend’s till to chat very briefly to her…

Since I feel anxious about the future I’m going to write about things that I am going to do once I have more free time (after my masters degree):

  1. Finish learning to drive and take my driving test
  2. Learn more Japanese grammar

I can’t think of number three yet.

page disappearance

33

Okay, today I realised that I may have missed page 27 of the project. I only realised this about an hour ago, so tomorrow when I get into the school of art for the day, I will look through all the pages to double check. I’ve drawn a pencil page which is number 34 for the second time (and it says about missing a page)… because I thought that would probably be better than sneakily adding a 27th page. I think that might look a bit out of synchronisation.

Anyway, the image above is page 33, which I spent a long time on today, just  shading. I got a big watercolour brush as well today which I used to make the page a bit blue. This project is coming to a conclusion I suppose… since I will likely stop at 40 pages. After that, I have a collaborative printmaking exchange thing to get going. I have to print 20 copies of one of my copper plates. Not really looking forward to that as I will probably feel quite bored after a while! Maybe I can listen to French or Japanese radio to practise my listening skills.

Today I tried to have a day dedicated to my own work only, although of course I got a little distracted and probably spent a bit too much on the art supplies (I also bought some watercolours as mine are diminishing in quantity. Probably didn’t need to buy them though…). Tomorrow is going to be a little bit busy as I will be attending a friend’s talk and then giving a friend a tutorial as part of one of my modules. That’s not a lot of stuff I guess, I could probably have enough time to do another couple of pages/check where page 27 has gone.

Tonight I should relax! I’ve done some drawing for a friend’s birthday and drawn that double page. I am going to take a look at some follow up sheet that I’ll need to write for my workshop (the photography one I mentioned previously). I’ll make some notes. I’m anxious about this class because I feel like I won’t be able to get a good grade in it as time is running out and I find it difficult to do some of the things that are in the syllabus. We’ll see. I think I’m just comparing myself to my classmates too much, perhaps.

I’ll do those notes now…

Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the drawing. It’s one of my favourite pages. All of the pages are available to view on my tumblr, by the way! I’ll update my deviantART with them soon too.
